Why did the settlers embark on the Oregon Trail? In fact, why did any settlers embark anywhere?

Forgive the strange wording but what I mean is what were the circumstances that inspired/forced the settlers to go over vast and dangerous expanses of unchartered country to distant and possibly non-existant lands. Was it economic depression, lack of jobs, overpopulation?
